Con Fire provides fire suppression, fire prevention and emergency medical services to more than a million people across its 304 square-mile District area, and through mutual aid, in and around the 20 cities and unincorporated communities of Contra Costa County, California. The District, with 26 fire stations and more than 400 employees, is dedicated to preserving life, property and the environment.

The Fire Investigator II conducts inspections of public and private premises, enforces fire ordinances and regulations, and performs fire investigations.

What you will typically be responsible for:

  • Reviewing building plans, site plans, and fire protection system plans for compliance with fire safety standards
  • Conducting field inspections of projects under construction for compliance with approved plans and specifications
  • Conducting inspections of hazardous & non-hazardous occupancies
  • Enforcing fire ordinances and regulations
  • Educating the public on fire safety practices

Minimum Qualifications

License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Out of state valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license will be accepted during the application process.

Education: An Associate of Arts Degree from an accredited institution with a major in fire science, engineering, architecture, construction technology, building inspection, fire prevention or closely related field.

Certificates and Training Required: 1) Successful completion of California State Fire Service Training and Education courses: Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D (Fire Prevention 1A, 1B and 1C or certification as a CFSTES Fire Prevention Officer 1; Fire Prevention Officer 2; Fire Prevention Officer 3 or CSFTES Fire Inspector; Fire Plans Examiner, or Certified Fire Marshal may be substituted as equivalency), and Fire Investigation 1A or equivalency, and 2) successful completion of the California Peace Officers’ Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Certified Penal Code 832 Module A training program

Within 12 months of employment, appointees must satisfactorily complete the following California State Fire Service Training and Education courses: Fire Inspector 2A, 2B, 2C, and 2D.

3) International Code Council Certification as a Fire Inspector I certification.
Within 12 months of employment, appointees must satisfactorily complete International Code Council certification as a Fire Inspector II or Fire Plans Examiner.

Ongoing maintenance of certification(s) is required.

And

Experience: Any of the following:

1) Three (3) years of full-time or its equivalent as a firefighter comparable to a firefighter with the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District.

Or

2) Two (2) years of full-time experience or its equivalent as a Fire Inspector comparable to a Contra Costa County Fire Prevention District Fire Inspector I.

Or

3) Two (2) years of full-time experience or its equivalent of applied technical fire inspection in code enforcement compliance related to fire prevention, fire engineering, fire safety, fire chemistry or building inspection which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Other Requirements:

Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.

Age: Must be at least 21 years of age.

Physical Requirements: Ability to meet such health standards as is established by the County Medical Consultant.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Completion of California State Fire Service Training and Education Fire Inspector 2A, 2B, 2C, and 2D courses
  • Certification as an International Code Council Certification Fire Inspector II
  • Experience with data analysis and plan review
  • Experience regulating or responding to incidents involving Hazardous Materials
  • Experience in community risk reduction
  • Experience in defensible space inspection
  • Experience with public speaking and giving presentations

 

Selection Process

  1. Application Filing and Evaluation: Applicants will be required to complete a supplemental questionnaire at the time of application, applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will move forward in the next phase of the recruitment process.
  2.  Online Interview: Candidates who possess the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in an online interview.  In the oral interview, candidates must achieve an average passing score of 70% or higher on each of the oral interview competencies, as well as an overall passing score of 70% of higher.  The interview will measure candidates’ competencies as they relate to the Fire Inspector II classification. These may include, but are not limited to: Critical Thinking, Legal and Regulatory Navigation, Professional and Technical Expertise, Attention to Detail, and Displaying Ownership. (Weighted 100%)
 The Fire Inspector II online interview is tentatively scheduled to take place via computer (remotely) on the first week of December.
 The online interview will be administered remotely using a computer or mobile device such as a tablet. You will need access to a reliable internet connection to participate in the online interview, as well as computer or mobile device with a camera.

The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

CONVICTION HISTORY
After you receive a conditional job offer, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the job for which you have received a conditional job offer. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with Contra Costa County. If you accept a conditional job offer, the Human Resources department will contact you to schedule a fingerprinting appointment.
DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
